Kapiti Island Expedition

1 - Chiara had a couple of Kapiti Island visitor permits, so we figured an intrepid mid-week expedition was in order...

2 - ...and here I am turning 28 (or possibly 218, if you are in the habit of reading forks) and looking unaccustomed to being on the other side of a camera. If I look a little tired, it's because...

3 - ...we had to catch the train at 6.55am

4 - Anyway, the island is just of the West Coast, north of Wellington...

5 - boat launching into the surf must be a challenge

6 - the ferry

7 - arriving on the island was easy enough, to the right you can see the local Kaumatua, who was on site to supervise the removal of a number of bats that were departing the scene

8 - 20 minute talk from one of the DOC guys

9 - lots of bird life around the place, I was surprised to see this Kereru walking about on the beach

10

11 - Of course, Wekas were rambling about and trying to get into bags, food, cameras, and everything. Their fascination for the pasta muffins was quite something...

12 - Not something you're likely to see every day - a Takahe taking a bath

13

14 - 'Did you just call me as a big purple hen?'

15 - Black Robin

16 - quite a bit of driftwood around the place...

Sarena's Farewell

1 - Sarena's departure to the high-octane world of Pharmaceutical marketing was marked with a staff function at the Thistle Inn. The going-away gift Sarena is shown unwrapping is this photo:

2 - ...from a couple of months ago

3 - photographing in near darkness has its challenges - it isn't possible to use burst mode with the flash, so there is a high chance of catching people mid-blink (or possibly mid-quite-understandable-speedlite-hatred)...

RPNYC Spring Series (Best of Race 1)

1 - Saturday was something of a landmark in my short and chequered sailing photography career, as it was the first time I shot from on the water - particular thanks to Kyle for sorting that one out, and to the Te Ruru crew for their excellent chase boat skills. Anyway, wielding a 300mm telephoto lens whilst bobbing about on the water proved to be a little interesting at times...

2 - The race started out in 15 knots, enough to put the yachts' rails under as they came in to the top mark. Pretty Boy Floyd led the fleet at the first mark...

3 - ...with Andiamo next

4 - St Laurence approaching the top mark

5 - The Guarantee was back in the fleet after a slow start

6 - Esprit's skipper keeping a close eye on the 1st mark

7

8 - St Laurence had sped off over the horizon by the time we reached the 2nd mark

9

9 - MRX vs Interislander

10 - Underworld drifts along as the wind dies north of Soames Is.

11 - Blue Magic, Esprit, and Eat My Shorts in close proximity

It Must be Spring, I Guess

1 - Tulip Sunday in Wellington (photos coming this week)

2 - on the subject of flowers, the Orchids were doing their thing, as they do year-round in the greenhouse

3 - Back on the subject of spring, there were ducklings! Lots of them!

4 - Stop! Stop! Actually, yes, they walked across the grate, but there were no sudden disappearances

World of Wearable Art Comedy II

1 - I went back to Midland Park during Friday lunchtime to see if the World of Wearable Art series would put on a different show - they didn't - same comedians, same jokes, same models, same costumes, same everything. I bought sushi and went back to work.

2 - ...although this outfit was different, the midday light provides a particularly cadaverous effect

3 - nice coathanger

World of Wearable Art Comedy

1 - Midland Park hosted a bunch of comedy acts in support of Wellington's 3rd year of hosting the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) Awards show - previous years (2006 and 2005) have featured street parades, but this year it looks like things are a little different. These shows are running for the next two weeks.

6 - OZ Star Airline Hostesses

7 - Mr Fungus doing what Mr Fungus does

9 - the usual Midland Park lunchtime dwellers varied between amused, bemused, and completely indifferent...

10 - Vinyl Burns striking a particularly photogenic pose...

11 - one-wheel biking into a tree. Hazardous occupation!

RPNYC Opening Day

1 - Saturday featured the opening day for the RPNYC's 125th season

2 - The inner harbour startline led to one of the fishermen managing to catch a yacht. Result? Lots of swearing...

3

4

5 - Heading across the line as the gun goes

6 - I moved to Pt. Jerningham to catch the action, here Flying Boat and The Guarantee are going head to head...

7 - The Guarantee tacks...

8 - ...and for a moment, it's all on...

9 - Flying Circus (tacking under a little less pressure)

10 - Blue Magic and Xanadu (background)

11 - St Laurence II at speed, and heading for line and club handicap honours

12 - Andiamo PHRF handicap winner

15 - Blue Magic suffered the indignity of being passed to leeward on the last leg by the somewhat larger Nomos

Reading Courtenay Dance Fest

Last Monday, the Reading Cinema complex played host to the Courtenay Dance Fest, featuring (among other things) Hip Hop dancers, a Polish Folk group, a smattering of Belly Dancers, and a marriage proposal. Check it out...

WRC Rally New Zealand (part 3)

1 - Special stage 11 in the afternoon - there was a big crowd and limited space along the fence line, but I elbowed my way to the front and attached the telephoto to get some shots up the road. It couldn't have been much better, the cars were blasting around the corner ('backing it in', as a commentator would say), and the afternoon light was catching the dust trails.

2 - Loeb, still chasing Gronholm for 1st place

3 - Atkinson

4 - Gronholm was under pressure for most of the rally, but managed a close win. He's inches from the bank in this shot

6 - Hirvonen

WRC Rally New Zealand (part 2)

1 - A kind lady donated four tickets to the Super Special Stage at Mystery Creek in Hamilton, so after a bit of a drive we got to catch the cars testing their flight and submarine capabilities...
